DESCRIPTION:Unity360\, a program of South Florida People of Color\, is a series of guided community discussions about the ways in which race\, systemic and institutional racism\, bias and bigotry shape our society and impact our daily interactions. Participants will be encouraged to speak personally\, honestly and openly; learn skills to identify bias\, micro-aggressions\, and racism; and formulate responses that create a foundation for empathy and understanding. \nThe goals of the series are: \n\nPromote awareness of historical and casual racism\, and help understand and deal with unconscious biases\nProvide a safe space to speak honestly and personally about race and racism\nProvide tools for diffusing bigoted language and behaviors at work and school\, among family and friends\, and in public places\nImprove the quality of community life for everyone\nEstablish a basis for deeper empathy to decrease “Us vs. Them”\n\nJoin us for our two-part Summer 2017 series at Miami Shores Community Church\, 9823 NE 4th Ave\, Miami Shores\, FL 33138\,305-759-3445 \nThe following book is recommended but not required for participation. \nWaking Up White\, and Finding Myself in the Story of Race\, Debby Irving \nBook Excerpt: Waking Up White \nTEDx: Finding Myself in the Story of Race \nSession 1 \nSaturday\, July 15\, 9:30am – 2pm (coffee/tea and lunch included) \nFacilitated discussion and interactive workshop based on “Waking Up White” \nQuestions will be provided to prepare for the second session. \nSession 2 \nSaturday\, July 22\, 10:00-12:00pm (coffee/tea and snacks) \nBuilding on Week 1’s activities\, this session will deepen our understanding of privilege and how it functions in our daily interactions\, while providing tools to recognize and challenge racial bias when we encounter it. \nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:What's Going On: Marvin Gaye's America
DESCRIPTION:On January 13th\, an exhibition I’m curating at the Ansin Family Art Gallery at the Miramar Cultural Center opens. It’s entitled “What’s Going On: Marvin Gaye’s America”\, it coincides with a performance by Marvin Gaye tribute artist Brian Owens. The exhibit is a pictorial chronology of the turbulent years in American society leading up to the release of Gaye’s “What’s Going On” album in 1972. It also includes pieces and design elements created by Danny Agnew of the Roots Collective. \nTickets are available here. Use the promo code MARVIN. \nIf you can’t attend the opening reception and show\, the exhibit is free and will be on display through the end of February. There are programs that will go along with the exhibit and I’ll share more information later.
