SUMMARY:Reconstruction and the Jim Crow Era
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 29th\, 5:00 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. \nFollowing the end of the Civil War\, Florida joined the other former Confederate states in rebuilding the nation. Similar to other states\, the era of Reconstruction saw the promise of African American advancement in education\, politics\, and business. Despite these advancements\, Jim Crow segregation also rose\, eventually subverting the progress of African Americans and leading to increased violence throughout Florida. \nThis presentation will explore the progress and peril African Americans experienced during the Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras. Reconstruction and the Jim Crow Era is part of a conversation series\, The Long History of Race Relations in Florida\, convened by Florida Humanities in an effort to better understand the historical forces that influence Florida’s politics\, culture\, and economy. \nParticipating Panelists \n\nDr. Tameka Hobbs is the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of History at Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens.\nDr. Will Guzman is a Professor of history at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View\, Texas.\nDr. David Jackson (Moderator) is the Associate Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate College at Florida A&M University. He is also a Professor of History at FAMU and a member of the Board of Directors for Florida Humanities.

SUMMARY:Freedom Flicks: I Am Not Your Negro
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, January 31st from 6:30-9pm Community Justice Project\, in partnership with the Miami Social Justice Table\, Celebrate Diversity Miami\, and Miami Shores PoC (South Florida People of Color) will screen I Am Not Your Negro followed by a discussion from Dr. Tameka Bradley Hobbs. The film screening\, which is FREE and open to the public\, will be held at Space Called Tribe\, a new multipurpose co-working space in Overtown owned byFelecia Hatcher and Derick Pearson of Code Fever Miami and BlackTech Week. Catering of small bites provided by Lil Greenhouse Grill. \nFrom the film’s official website:\n“Master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished\, Remember This House. The result is a radical\, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America\, using Baldwin’s original words and flood of rich archival material. I Am Not Your Negro is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of#BlackLivesMatter. It is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And\, ultimately\, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of Medgar Evers\, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.\, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for.” \nThe film first screened at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival where it won the People’s Choice Award in the documentary category. It was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 89th Academy Awards.

SUMMARY:Value of Miami's Community: Premiere Podcast
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to kick-off 2018 with a brand new podcast series in the spirit ofDesigning the WE that will regularly highlight leaders & organizations from throughout greater Miami focused on making a positive impact on our community development! \nFor episode #1\, which falls on W.K. Kellogg Foundation‘s 2nd annualNational Day of Racial Healing #NDORH\, our featured organization is Miami Shores PoC (aka South Florida PoC) and their Unity 360 Community Race Dialogue Series. \nWe’ll be joined by the following key speakers: \nRoni Bennett\, is the Founder & Executive Director of South Florida PoC. After an accomplished business career\, she is devoting this part of her life to improving race relations in the South Florida community. Since being founded in 2015\, South Florida PoC’s goal is to reduce racism and bigotry by providing for dialogue and personal connections across the racial divide. With a successful launch and strong support across several local communities\, the group recently expanded to offer its solutions to all of South Florida. \nJordana A. Hart\, is an immigration lawyer and member of the Board of Directors of South Florida PoC. She co-facilitates the Unity 360 series\, with a specific interest in generating personal\, and perhaps uncomfortable conversations about white privilege and supremacy across the racial divide. Jordana works on the theory that anti-racist laws & policies\, while powerful\, will never end systemic racism without disrupting bias and fear among and within whites\, and helping us all understand how history has brought us to where we are today. \nTameka Bradley Hobbs\, Ph.D. who is a lecturer at Florida Memorial University\, as well as the facilitator and curriculum developer for Unity 360. In addition to her teaching experience\, Dr. Hobbs has served as a researcher\, writer\, consultant\, and director for a number of public and oral history projects in Florida and Virginia\, plus she authored ‘Democracy Abroad\, Lynching at Home: Racial Violence in Florida’. \nYou’re invited to mark your calendars for this premiere broadcast of ‘Value of Miami’s Community’\, and can learn more about our partner organization at:www.southfloridapoc.org\, plus check out the #NDORH movement @ http://healourcommunities.org/ \nIf you or your organization would like to be part of our podcast in the future\, please send a brief e-mail expressing interest to: CelebrateDiversityMiami@gmail.com

SUMMARY:What's Going On: Marvin Gaye's America
DESCRIPTION:On January 13th\, an exhibition I’m curating at the Ansin Family Art Gallery at the Miramar Cultural Center opens. It’s entitled “What’s Going On: Marvin Gaye’s America”\, it coincides with a performance by Marvin Gaye tribute artist Brian Owens. The exhibit is a pictorial chronology of the turbulent years in American society leading up to the release of Gaye’s “What’s Going On” album in 1972. It also includes pieces and design elements created by Danny Agnew of the Roots Collective. \nTickets are available here. Use the promo code MARVIN. \nIf you can’t attend the opening reception and show\, the exhibit is free and will be on display through the end of February. There are programs that will go along with the exhibit and I’ll share more information later.
