I put together a "gumbo garden basket" to use as a hands-on activity with the kids. Most of them had never touched okra before, and few new that the vegetable traced its roots to Africa.

My husband, William Ashanti Hobbs, who was born in Fort Lauderdale, found Betty Miller, a friend from his own neighborhood. They hadn't seen each other in over 30 years.
